Flatiron School vs. Thinkful – Coding Bootcamp Comparison

If you’re considering doing a coding bootcamp, you’ve probably come across both Flatiron School and Thinkful. Both are well-known, highly-rated schools. In addition they both specialize in two of the most popular area of study; software engineering and data science,

What are the differences between the schools and how should you choose? We’re gong to look at both schools and what they offer. We will look at programs, pricing, time commitment, quality of instruction, financing, and job outcomes.

Here is how they stack up against each other.

Programs Available:

FlatIron School

FlatIron School offers on-campus courses in:

•Software engineering

•Data science,

•Cybersecurity analytics

•Cybersecurity engineering.

All these programs are available online, except cybersecurity engineering. You can only attend this course on-campus.

If you’d like to attend in person, Flatiron School has campuses in the following U.S cities:

•New York

•San Francisco

•Washington D.C.

Flatiron School are has several free online bootcamp prep courses. These are perfect for those who want to get a head start on real-deal coding bootcamps.

Thinkful offers only online courses in the following subjects:

•Software engineering

•Technical product management.

If you are looking to study cyber security, Flatiron, for the time being, is your only choice.

If you want to learn UX/UI design, data analytics, digital marketing, or technical project management, then Thinkful, is your only choice.

Both schools offer excellent programs in software engineering and data science.

If you live in one of the cities mentioned above, Flatiron might be a better choice, if you prefer a real-world learning environment.

Price Range

FlatIron School

FlatIron School offers coding bootcamps both on campus and online. Flatiron’s courses cost the same amount. For a 4- month course, with a 45-50 hour a week time commitment, you’ll have to pay $16,900

An initial deposit of $500 secures your seat, and you pay the rest in one lump sum before the course starts.

There is a cheaper option available though. If you are willing to give up the live lectures and technical mentorship, you can choose a self-paced learning option for $9600. These are the same courses you would get in a normal class, but you’ll complete them at your own pace. You have 15 months to complete them.

Thinkful’s price structure is more flexible. They offer 13 different courses, and each has a different price.

UX courses

Thinkful offers two courses in UI/UX. They offer a full-time 5 month immersion course which costs $12,150.

They also offer a 6 month, part-time UX/UI Design flex course for $7,900.

Software Engineering

Again, Thinkful offers two courses. They have a full-time, 5-month, software engineering Immersion course that costs $16,000. They also offer a 6-month, part-time software engineering flex course for $7,900.

Data Analytics and Science Courses

Thinkful offers both data analytics and data science courses. For both they offer full time and flex options, which changes the price by a lot.

For data analytics, thinkful offers a 4-month, full-time immersion course for $12,250 and for a 6.5-month flex option, they charge $6,500.

For data science, Thinkful’s 5 month, full-time immersion course costs $18,000. Their 6-month part-time flex option costs $7,900.

Digital Marketing and Project Management

One unique thing about Thinkful is that they also offer courses in digital marketing and project management.

Thinkful’s 6 week, full-time digital marketing course costs $7,900 whereas their part-time, 3- month flex option costs $4,900.

Finally, Thinkful offers technical and regular project management courses. Their full-time 3- month technical project management course costs $9,000. Their part time 5-month flex technical project management course costs $4,900. They also offer a 6-month, part-time, non-technical  product management course for $4,900

If you do an intensive course in either data science or software engineering, the cost is almost the same. But, Thinkful has a big advantage in price for students who want to take part time or flexible courses. Most part-time courses, flexible courses are almost $2000 cheaper at Thinkful than at Flatiron School.

Time Commitment

FlatIron School

On-campus students at FlatIron School can complete their course in  3 1/2 months. Online students, can do it in 5 months. If you want to do online self-paced, the amount of time it takes depends on you. You have 15 months to get through everything at your own pace.

As for the free prep courses, the time commitment depends on the course you take. For example, “Hacking 101” takes 2 hours to complete, while “Coding Bootcamp Prep” is a 75-hour course.

At Thinkful, candidates can choose between full-time immersion courses and part time flex courses. The full-time immersion courses tend to be between 4-5 months. The flex courses are usually about 6 months.

The only exception is in digital marketing and technical project management.

Thinkful’s full-time digital marketing course is 3 months, where as their flex option is 6 months.

For project management, the full-time course is 3 months and the part-time flex option is 5 months (for technical project management) or 6 months (for regular project management).

What’s the Difference Between Immersion and Flex Courses?

Immersion courses are full-time whereas flex courses are for candidates who have to fit studying into their work hours.

Flex coding courses let you access course materials for 15 days for free. If you choose to enroll, you also get one-on-one mentorship and career guidance

Both Flatiron School and Thinkful offer students intensive online courses that last about 5 months. The difference between the two schools is in the flexible options. Flatiron gives you 15 months to complete the material completely at your own pace. On the other hand, Thinkful has flex courses that meet “live” every week, and allow you to finish in about 6 months depending on the course.

Quality of Instruction

FlatIron School

In Flatiron, students have the choice of learning on campus. For some students this is already a huge difference maker as opposed to online learning.

Whether you choose in person or online, Flatiron School has a great team ready to help you learn. The instructors are excellent. On campus courses have an average of 25:1 student to teacher ratio. Online full-time classes have a 35:1 student-to-teacher ratio. You can always reach out to your instructor via Slack.

At Flatiron, you can work with your instructor or take part in mentored group work. There are also paired programming sessions you can join.

Another huge benefit of Flatiron is that you get matched up with a personal mentor who works in your industry.

Your tuition gets you weekly one-on-one weekly tech coaching sessions. And also bi-weekly education coaching.

Thinkful only offers online instruction.

That being said, most graduates say the instruction is excellent.

Thinkful also provides you with one-on-one mentorship. Your mentor helps you structure your study plan and tailor a curriculum for your study style.

For the entire 6 month course, you also have a career coach at your disposal. You’ll also be working with peers in your area. They can provide a valuable support network or join you for local events.

If you don’t mind online learning, both schools provide you with excellent instructors and up-to-date curriculums. You’ll also get one-on-one mentoring and career support with either school.

FlatIron School

FlatIron School gives you the option to pay upfront or apply for a student loan in the U.S.

If you decide to pay upfront, you make an initial deposit and then pay the rest before your class’s due date.

For student loans, FlatIron School has partnered with Skills Fund and Climb. If you qualify, you can pay the tuition in up to 36 monthly payments with Skills Fund, and 42 with Climb.

FlatIron School also supports several scholarships. For example,   The Access Scholarship which enables students to enroll for $0 upfront.

Another scholarship you can use at Flatiron is NCWIT’s Alabama & Michigan Digital Skills Initiative. You can win this scholarship if you identify as a female and live in Michigan or Alabama.

At Thinkful, tuition can be paid through monthly payments or upfront.

Like FlatIron School, Thinkful also offers loan financing through the Skills Fund.

Yet, unlike FlatIron, Thinkfull also offers an Income Share Agreement (ISA). This option allows you to get the skills you need without making any upfront payments. Once you’re hired and start making at least $40,000, you’ll pay back Thinkful 15% of your gross income until tuition is payed back in full.

Thinkful also offers a living stipend, in addition to their ISA, for students living in certain cities. You can check the cities on their website here. The school will pay you $1,500 to cover rent and bills while you commit to full-time learning. Once you get a job, paying at least $40,000, you’ll pay them 15% of your income until tuition and cost of living is payed back in full.

Both Flatiron School and Thinkful allow you to pay with student loans or scholarships. But only Thinkful offers an income sharing agreement.

The income sharing agreement is a great option for students who don’t have the money yet but are committed to working in tech.

Thinkful’s living stipid is also be a huge benefit for students who want to study full time. Not having to pay rent and bills allows students to focus 100% of their energy on the skills they need to succeed.

Chances of Getting a Job Afterwards

FlatIron School

According to Flatiron’s 2020 Jobs Report, 86% of graduates landed a job within the reporting period.

US campus graduates who accepted the jobs reported an average starting salary of $74,962.

Data provided by Thinkful shows that 84% of engineering flex graduates found jobs in less than 180 days. The median pay rate was $60,000.

For engineering immersion, 86% of graduates found jobs in less than 180 days. The median pay rate was $60,000.

For data science flex, 77% of graduates found jobs in less than 180 days. The median pay rate was $73,000.

Thinkful reports long term student outcomes. They claim that 66% of their graduates received at least one promotion since starting their new careers in respective fields. Of this 66%, 80% received their promotions in their first year

Moreover, Thinkful  reports that on average graduates say they got  a salary increase of about $20,000 in their first job. Graduates also say that they got an additional $20,000 within a year after that.

Both schools report similar amount of graduates (84% and 86%) obtaining jobs afterwards. Flatiron School reports that its average starting salary is higher, but keep in mind that average and median salary is not the same thing.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that Flatiron School only keeps track of U.S graduates.  Thinkful includes graduates from different countries where the salaries might be lower.

Final Verdict –  Which School is Better for Whom?

Both options are good but there are small differences across the board.

In terms of programs, Flatiron School has in-person learning, whereas Thinkful is entirely online.

Flatiron offers online part-time self-paced learning, whereas Thinkful offers part-time instructional learning.

Both schools offer software engineering and data science courses. You will only be able to study cyber security at Flatiron. And you will only be able to study data analytics, UI/UX, digital marketing and technical project management at Thinkful.

The price of full-time software engineering and data science courses are similar. However, Thinkful’s part time courses tend to be a bit cheaper than Flatiron’s

In terms of financing, the big difference is that Thinkful offers income sharing agreements. In some cases they also offer living stipends.

Both courses have excellent instruction and support in addition to job outcomes.

Whichever school you decide, you can’t really go wrong. Though each school does have small advantages which depends on your personal and unique situation.
